Student Computer Procedures= and Acceptable Use Policy

It is Lakewood Park Christian School’s goal= to provide a quality 21st century computer education to all students.  The student will le= arn how to utilize the computer and computer technology as a tool in their personal, educational and present/future work environment from a Biblical worldview (Colossians 3:17<= /st1:time>). This includes Internet communications in support of research and education.= The school’s Policy on Access to Electronic Information, Services, and Networks is also based on the requirements set forth by the Department of Education for the State of In= diana.

Freedom of expression is an inalienable human right and the foundation for self-government. Freedom of expression encompasses the right to freedom of speech and the corollary right to receive information. Such rights extend to minors as well as adults. Lake= wood allows the expression of these rights within the school to the extent that = they do not violate biblical standards as judged by the administration.  Computer usage is a privilege that entails responsibility and to remain eligible, students must be in support = of and consistent with the mission, vision, and core values of Lakewood.

In making decisions regarding student computer usage and access to the Interne= t, Lakewood considers= its own stated educational mission, goals, and objectives. Computer usage and electronic information research skills are now fundamental to preparation of students and future employees. Access to the Internet enables students to explore thousands of libraries, databases, bulletin boards, and other resources.  In the future, stu= dents may be able to exchange messages with people around the world. Lakewood expects t= hat faculty will blend thoughtful use of the Internet throughout the curriculum= and will provide guidance and instruction to students in its use. As much as possible, access from school to the Internet resources should be structured= in ways which point students to those which have been evaluated prior to use. While students will be able to move from resource to resource, some areas h= ave been previewed by staff and others have not been.  Students will be provided with guidelines and lists of resources particularly suited to learning objective= s.

Families should be aware that some material accessible via the Internet may contain items that are illegal, defamatory, inaccurate, or potentially offensive to some people. In addition, it is possible to purchase certain goods and serv= ices via the Internet which could result in unwanted financial obligations for w= hich a student's parent or guardian would be liable.  This is prohibited by Lakewood.

By their very nature, communications on computer= s are only reasonably secure and privacy cannot be guaranteed.  In using the Internet, students sho= uld remember that all communications and traces of sites visited could be recor= ded or monitored at either end of the connection.   Lakewood reserves the right = to monitor, access, retrieve, read or disclose for Lakewood, law enforcement officials or other third parties all information, messages or data files created, sent, received, or stored on the computer, whether from the Intern= et or not, without prior notice to the originators and recipients of such messages.

Students utilizing Lakewood-provided computer usage and Internet access must first h= ave the permission of and must be supervised by the Lakewood's professional staff. Second, = the student and parent must agree to the said policies and procedures and sign = the attached form.  Third, students utilizing school-provided computer usage and Internet access are responsible for appropriate behavior on-line just as they are in a classroom or other a= rea of the school. The same general rules for behavior and communications apply= .

The following are general Lakewood guideline= s for computer usage and Internet access:

Logi= n and Password

  • Your login will be as follows: (first name = last name) – i.e. fredflintstone    Notice that there= are no spaces and it is all lower case.
  • Everyone is required to have their own pass= word. You will set your password= the first time that you login.   Never share your password = with anyone!!!
  • When using the computer network, you are to= work under your own user account.  You are never allo= wed to sign on under someone else’s account.
  • You are responsible for what happens with y= our account – Everything is being tracked!
  • Lock your workstation if you have to leave = it.
  • Logoff your workstation at the end of class= .  8th period will sh= ut them all down.

Desktop and Personal Settings<= /b>

The standard desktop = settings will be utilized at all times. You may not change the desktop wallpaper, screen saver, and screen resolution.<= o:p>

Printing

  • Print nothing without permission.  With 90% of computer lessons  gr= aded on screen, there will be very little need for printing in computer cla= ss.
  • Printed pages for classes other than comput= er are the current school rate per page for black/white and color. Payment must be made prior to printing.

Software

  • No one will be able to install any software, personal files, games, or programs onto a school computer, or share th= em with other students.  Installing software without first obtaining a license for that software violates federal and state copyright laws.<= /li>
  • Only pre-installed, edutainment software is allowed.

Storage Media Usage (Diskette; CDs; USB)

  • All storage medium must be scanned for viru= ses by a computer instructor or the librarian prior to use =

Only students who have gotten permission from a computer instructor or the libra= rian are allowed to utilize storage medium to take class related assignments and documents between home and school.  <= /span>

  • If prior approval is given, a student’= ;s class related files may be copied onto storage medium that are brought= to school.  Any storage medi= um containing non-school related data will be confiscated.

Open Computer Lab Use

  • Students are encouraged to use the computer= labs for educational purposes even if they are not currently enrolled in a computer course.
  • Prior permission must be obtained before a student can come into the computer lab during class times.   This permission must be= given by the beginning of the school day.   Please do not interrupt a class to gain entrance. 
  • An instructor or adult monitor must be pres= ent whenever students are in the computer lab.
  • Open machines may be used while another cla= ss is in session at the instructor’s discretion and if it does not bec= ome a distraction to the current class.
  • Hours for the computer labs will be posted = each semester.

General Policies

  • Transferring co= pyrighted materials to or from any system or via the Lakewood network without express c= onsent of the owner is strictly forbidden and is a violation of Federal and S= tate laws.  Examples of illegal copying include:
    • Making a personal copy of software license= d to Lakewood
    • Copying files created by another person wi= thout obtaining that person's permission
    • Installing software on a computer without = first obtaining a license for that software
  • Browsing, exploring, or making other unauth= orized attempts to view data, files, or directories belonging to Lakewood not = deemed for student usage or to other users is forbidden.  It is also unacceptable behav= ior to corrupt files, introduce deviant software (worms, viruses, etc.), or interfere with someone else's legitimate computer use.  Possession of a program desig= ned to gain unauthorized access will be deemed to constitute an attempt at breaking computer security.
  • Students are expected to notify a computer = lab instructor or teacher if he/she is able to get to an Internet site tha= t is not appropriate.
  • Students are expected to treat the equipmen= t with appropriate care. In addition:
    • Computer repairs, re-cabling, etc. must be= done by Computer Services staff members.&= nbsp; Students are not allowed to open the computer cases.
    • Food and drink are not allowed in the Comp= uter Lab.

The following uses of school-provided Internet access is prohibited:=

·         to access, upload, download, or distribute pornographic, obscene, or sexually explicit material;

·         to upload, download, or otherwise transmit any content prohibited by Lakewood

·         to enable any unauthorized person to have access to use the computers or Inter= net of Lakewood

·         to take any action that may jeopardize the security of the Lakewood computer system or Internet us= e

·         to transmit obscene, abusive, sexually explicit, or threatening language;=

·         to violate any local, state, or federal statute;

·         to vandalize, damage, or disable the property of another individual or organization;

·         to access another individual's materials, information, or files without permission;

·         to violate copyright or otherwise use of the intellectual property of another individual or organization without permiss= ion.

·         to use the Internet in violation of biblical standards as judged by the administration

·         to utilize electronic communication via chat rooms

·         to utilize the Internet for shopping

·         to access games

·      =    to access any form of E-mail

Any violation of Lakewood policies and rules will result= in contact with parents and may also include one of more of the following consequences:

·         loss of the student’s username and/or acce= ss to the Internet for the remainder of the current grading period or the remainder of the year.

·         Additional disciplinary action, including but not limited to, school suspension.<= /o:p>

·         When and where applicable, law enforcement agencies may be involved. =

Lakewood will not be responsible for any damages users suffer, including--but not limited to--loss of data resulting from delays or interruptions in service. Lakewood will not be responsible for the accuracy, nature, or quality of information stored on Lakewood<= /st1:place> hard drives, or servers; nor for the accuracy, nature, or quality of inform= ation gathered through Lakewood-provided Internet access.
